Total Organic Caron Analyzer (TOC)
Instrument Details
img1
Make :
Shimadzu, Singapore

Model :
TOC-LCSH+SSM 5000A

Specification :

Estimates total carbon (TC), total organic carbon (TOC), inorganic carbon (IC), non-purgeable organic carbon (NPOC) from both solid and liquid samples.
Detection range for total carbon is 4 ug/L to 30,000 mg/L and can measure TC in 3 min. This instrument is equipped with automatic sample dilutor.

Samples are combusted by heating at 680°C (combustion catalytic oxidation method) in an oxygen-rich environment inside TC combustion tubes filled with a platinum catalyst.
The carbon dioxide generated by oxidation is detected using non-dispersive infrared gas analyzer (NDIR). The concentration of TC in the sample is obtained through comparison with a calibration curve.
Furthermore, by subjecting the oxidized sample to the sparging process, the IC (inorganic carbon) in the sample is converted to carbon dioxide, and the IC concentration is obtained by detecting with NDIR.

NPOC (non-purgeable organic carbon) Measurement
In water and other samples in which the IC component of the total carbon (TC) is extremely large. The organic carbon is usually measured via an NPOC measurement.
By sparging samples to which a small amount of hydrochloric acid has been added, the IC in the sample is converted to carbon dioxide, which is removed and POC (purgeable organic carbon) may also be lost, and the TOC is obtained by measuring the TC in the treated sample, which is referred as NPOC

MAIN FEATURES OF THE INSTRUMENT

1. Uses 680 °C combustion catalytic oxidation – non-dispersive infrared detection (NDIR) method
2. Estimates TC and IC in less than 3 min and also further measures NPOC, TOC
3. Automatic sample injection using a syringe pump and slide type injection mechanism
Applications
• Environmental
• Pharmaceutical Drug research
• Geochemical/Mining Industry
• Agriculture
